BAYS Tryouts and Schedule

FALL TRYOUTS For the Spring 08 - COMPLETED

Tryouts for the Spring 2008 BAYS season are planned!. In the fall 2007, tryouts will be held for U9 and U15/U16 and U17/U18 age groups.

You need to first register online

This one simple step will register you for both the tryouts and the spring season, eliminating the need to fill out multiple forms as in the past. If for any reason you cannot get this completed within 5 days of your tryout, bring the enclosed application and a check for $95.00 to the tryout field ($80.00 plus a $15.00 late fee). As always, NYS wants all interested children to have the opportunity to play soccer. If there are extenuating circumstances with respect to filling out the paperwork, or sending in the check, please notify us. We will make every effort to ensure that all Newton children that want to play get to play.

We will place every child that registers on a team as long as we have enough coaches. If for some reason we don’t have enough coaches, a full refund will be issued.

Please consider volunteering to become a coach, assistant coach, team manager or tryout assistant. We are a volunteer organization and rely on the help of parents like you. In addition, I am confident that you will not only find it a rewarding experience, but also an enjoyable one.

Spring BAYS :

General BAYS Info. Newton Youth Soccer ("NYS") participates in BAYS, the Boston Area Youth Soccer League. BAYS is one of several regional leagues across Massachusetts that provide "travel" soccer, allowing teams from different towns to play one another. Each Spring, Newton fields about 65 teams from age nine through age eighteen. There is also a smaller BAYS program in the Fall. Many Newton players participate in BAYS as well as the NYS Fall Intramural program, and they are encouraged to do so. (The game times generally do not conflict). Both boys and girls are invited to participate in all NYS activities. (Newton Girls Soccer is a separate program for girls only.)

BAYS games are played on Saturdays (through U-14) and Sundays for older groups. The Spring season runs for ten weeks from early April through early June. In addition to the weekly games, most teams practice twice a week. Half of the games are "away," within an area bounded roughly by Routes 3 and 495.

Unlike our Fall intramural program, BAYS teams are organized by birthdates and according to the players’ level of soccer skill. Newton teams play teams from other towns with approximately the same skill level. Divisions 1 and 2 in BAYS are the most competitive, with playoffs leading to a state championship tournament in the Spring. Teams from all divisions often participate in weekend tournaments, which usually occur on holidays such as Memorial Day or Columbus Day.

Tryouts. BAYS tryouts for Newton Youth Soccer are held in most cases once each year. In the spring, we hold most of the required tryouts and in the fall we hold tryouts for U9 and U15/U16. We do our best to make the tryout process a positive, fun experience for the players. A tryout schedule appears on this website. There may also be call back tryouts to help us place players on the appropriate level team for their skill level. In many cases the differences between players are not significant so that team placements, especially in the younger age groups, are at best approximations. We value coaches input and we consider players evaluation into the overall rating.

The tryout process is followed and players are evaluated mainly in a team environment during short games. Several evaluators rate the players and the scores are carefully evaluated before placement.

Due to the large number of teams and players involved, make up tryouts are generally NOT available. If you have an irreconcilable conflict, speak with your  coach or the age coordinator.  Parent volunteers are often needed at the tryouts to help with registration and "chaperoning" groups of players.

Coaching. In the Spring BAYS program we field as many teams as we have players. We are limited only by the number of volunteer coaches and assistant coaches who offer their time. Superior soccer skill or experience is not required to be a BAYS coach. What is required is the ability to work with children and a willingness to learn. If you have limited or even no soccer experience, we can provide you with training and support to enable you to become a competent coach for your child’s team. To volunteer as a coach please fill in the blank on the application form.

If you have any questions about the BAYS program, or the tryouts, check out our website at www.newtonsoccer.org, speak with your Fall intramural or previous BAYS coach, or email NYS.
