2010 Tryouts Information
Registration opened on May 4, 2010
Dear parents and players
Tryouts for playing in the fall 2010 - spring 2011 BAYS are held in the spring season for age groups U9 thru U14.
In the fall 2010, tryouts will be held for U16 and up groups wanting to play in the spring 2010.
In order to tryout, first you'll need to register online. Please read the registration process. This one simple step will register you for both the tryouts and the season. In the fall, a limited number of team participate in the BAYS travel program. First four teams will be selected based on the tryouts and coaches evaluations. Players not part of the four teams will be eligible to play in the In-Town program and the fee will be transferred to automatically or at the parent request a refund can be issued. As always, NYS wants all interested children to have the opportunity to play soccer. If there are extenuating circumstances such as affording a payment, please notify us. We will make every effort to ensure that all Newton children that want to play get to play.
Please consider volunteering to become a coach, assistant coach, team manager or tryout assistant. We are a volunteer organization and rely on the help of parents like you. In addition, we're confident that you will not only find it a rewarding experience, but also an enjoyable one.

Tryout Dates and Times:
Tryouts for the Fall 2010/Spring 2011 BAYS season are scheduled. The grade noted is the grade your son will be in
starting Fall 2010. Remember that BAYS teams are formed and stay together
for both the fall and spring seasons. NYS currently is planning to have 3
U9 teams and 5 U10 teams. For U11-U14, the number of teams will be
determined by the number of kids and coaches. Note that U16 and U18 play
only in the spring.
Tryouts will be 1+ hour
sessions. Please register online at least one
week prior to the tryout date starting in May.
You will receive an email from your Age Group Coordinator (AGC) a day or
two before the tryout with your assigned tryout time and the location.
Anyone with direct conflicts should contact their AGC (contact information can
be found at http://newtonsoccer.org/contacts.htm.)

BAYS Program Information:
General BAYS Info. Newton Youth Soccer ("NYS") participates in BAYS, the Boston Area Youth Soccer League. BAYS is one of several regional leagues across Massachusetts that provide "travel" soccer, allowing teams from different towns to play one another. Each Spring, Newton fields about 55 teams from age ten through age eighteen. There is also a smaller BAYS program in the Fall. Many Newton players participate in BAYS as well as the NYS Fall Intramural program, and they are encouraged to do so (the game times generally do not conflict). Both boys and girls are invited to participate in all NYS activities. (Newton Girls Soccer is a separate program for girls only.)
BAYS games are played on Saturdays (through U-14). U16 and above have different schedule and play in the in the spring only. The Spring season runs for ten weeks from early April through early June. In addition to the weekly games, most teams practice twice a week. Half of the games are "away," within an area bounded roughly by Routes 3 and 495.
Unlike our Fall intramural program, BAYS teams are organized by birth date and according to the players’ level of soccer skill. Newton teams play teams from other towns with approximately the same skill level. Divisions 1 and 2 in BAYS are the most competitive, with possible playoffs leading to a state championship tournament in the Spring. Teams from all divisions often participate in weekend tournaments, which usually occur on holidays such as Memorial Day or Columbus Day.
Tryouts. Most BAYS tryouts for Newton Youth Soccer are held once each year in the spring with two age groups trying out in the fall as well. We do our best to make the tryout process a positive, fun experience for the players. A tryout schedule appears below. There may also be call back tryouts to help us place players on the appropriate level team for their skill level. In many cases the differences between players are not significant so that team placements, especially in the younger age groups, are at best approximations.
Due to the large number of teams and players involved, make up tryouts are generally NOT available. If you have an irreconcilable conflict, speak with your Fall intramural coach or previous BAYS coach. Teams are organized by single-year age groupings based on date of birth. Please be sure that you are attending the correct tryout. Parent volunteers are often needed at the tryouts to help with registration and "chaperoning" groups of players.
Coaching. In the Spring BAYS program we field as many teams as we have players. We are limited only by the number of volunteer coaches and assistant coaches who offer their time. Superior soccer skill or experience is not required to be a BAYS coach. What is required is the ability to work with children and a willingness to learn. If you have limited or even no soccer experience, we can provide you with training and support to enable you to become a competent coach for your child’s team. To volunteer as a coach please email us.
If you have any questions about the BAYS program, or the tryouts, check out our website at www.newtonsoccer.org, email or speak with your Fall intramural or previous BAYS coach.
