BAYS Coaches - Practice Plans

One of the key things to a successful practice is planning.  Consider the following structure as you plan your practice:

  • Technical warm-up
  • Small-sided game that reinforces the skill being taught
  • Scrimmage / game

The following links provide a wealth of information and ideas for structuring practices.  In addition, the Mass Youth Soccer Association has an entire season of practice plans you can follow that are age group specific.

Training Support Options

Newton Youth Soccer has a few options to give you additional support to coach your team.

Have a Professional Coach Train Your Team

In addition to the practice plans above, NYS coaches can have a professional coach lead your team through a practice.  This is a great way for the NYS coach to observe and learn how a professional would run a practice session.  You can use the session to focus on anything you want, perhaps something you see the team needs to improve on, but are struggling to communicate and show how.  This is not a drop off session, coaches should participate like a normal practice.

Each BAYS team is allowed to sign up for two 75 minute training sessions with a MPS coach.  These sessions will take place at Albemarle Field E (near tennis courts). If you want the MPS coach to work on something in particular, please include it in the "What to work on" section.  We have allocated capacity for 2 sessions per season per team.  Once we have the initial requests, there is the possibility that you can sign up for more.

To see available times and sign your team up use the online form that will be emailed to all coaches after coaches' meeting.

CATZCoach Online Training Program

Coaches can sign up for the CATZCoach online training and team management program.  This program will give you a complete season worth of practice plans, by age group, that you can see being coached on video and then replicate on the field.  To see a demonstration of the program, please go to  Click on the Login box and use the username “demo2” and the password “password”.   To sign up for the program, click on the Sign Up box. Make sure to get a coupon code from your age group coordinator so there will be no charge for you.

If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail at or call me at (781) 449-2289.

Coaches Announcements

Spring Update

1.  NO IM Saturday sessions over Memorial Day Weekend.  1st Grade IM Skills will go on as usual Monday at usual time/place.

2.  Registration for Fall 2015 IM is now open.

3.  Registration for Fall 2015 / Spring 2016 Travel (BAYS) Soccer is now OPEN.  Please see below for more information.

Your son must tryout to be considered for a BAYS team (if you have an extenuating circumstance that keeps your child from trying out please contact the appropriate age group coordinator). Please note that the NYS expectation is that if your child is assigned to a BAYS team that he/she plays in both the Fall AND Spring seasons. The BAYS high school 9-12 league players do not tryout. Those teams are formed in the fall and play only in the fall.

Registration is required to be eligible to tryout. Once registered, your child will receive a tryout time (either 1:30PM, 3:00PM, 4:30PM). You will receive notice of this tryout time approximately 1 week prior to the tryout date from the appropriate Age Group Coordinator.

Each tryout time will last approximately one hour. Players should wear cleats, shinpads, and wear appropriate training gear. The tryouts will consist of a series of scrimmages that allow independent evaluators to assess their level of play. Our goal is to provide the appropriate team that matches the skill level of the child. This will give them the best experience learning and playing soccer.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your tryout time so that you can sign your child in and we can organize the kids and start on time.

PLEASE NOTE: All U9 participants will need to attend both tryout dates at their assigned times.

Due to the large number of players involved, NYS does not offer make-up tryouts. If your child has an unavoidable conflict, please speak with your current coach and Age Group Coordinator.

Tryout Dates - Spring 2015 Tryouts for Fall 2015/Spring 2016 Season

Travel team tryouts dates are:

Sunday May 31
U11 at Nahanton
U14 (Includes U13 as these age groups are combined into 1) at Weeks

Sunday June 7
U9 at Highlands
U10 at Lincoln Waban

Sunday June 14
U9 at Nahanton
U12 at Weeks

Players will be randomly assigned to a tryout session at 1:30, 3:00, or 4:30pm. Notice of the assigned session will go out a week to 5 days before the tryout. If you know your player has a conflict for a specific time slot please let his Age Group Coordinator know - he will try to assign to a different session. Requests to change to a different time after notices go out might not be accommodated.

Incoming U9 players must attend both tryouts on 6/7 and 6/14.

Tryouts are for the age group the player will be in next fall. If a player is currently playing on a travel team he will tryout for the next older age group (U14 includes U13 and U14).

For older players there is a High School 9-12 option. Link for details. There are also spring U16 and U18/19 options which open registration in the fall with tryouts in the fall.
