BAYS Coaches - Practice Plans

One of the key things to a successful practice is planning.  Consider the following structure as you plan your practice:

  • Technical warm-up
  • Small-sided game that reinforces the skill being taught
  • Scrimmage / game

The following links provide a wealth of information and ideas for structuring practices.  In addition, the Mass Youth Soccer Association has an entire season of practice plans you can follow that are age group specific.

Training Support Options

Newton Youth Soccer has a few options to give you additional support to coach your team.

Have a Professional Coach Train Your Team

In addition to the practice plans above, NYS coaches can have a professional coach lead your team through a practice.  This is a great way for the NYS coach to observe and learn how a professional would run a practice session.  You can use the session to focus on anything you want, perhaps something you see the team needs to improve on, but are struggling to communicate and show how.  This is not a drop off session, coaches should participate like a normal practice.

Each BAYS team is allowed to sign up for two 75 minute training sessions with a MPS coach.  These sessions will take place at Albemarle Field E (near tennis courts). If you want the MPS coach to work on something in particular, please include it in the "What to work on" section.  We have allocated capacity for 2 sessions per season per team.  Once we have the initial requests, there is the possibility that you can sign up for more.

To see available times and sign your team up use the online form that will be emailed to all coaches after coaches' meeting.

CATZCoach Online Training Program

Coaches can sign up for the CATZCoach online training and team management program.  This program will give you a complete season worth of practice plans, by age group, that you can see being coached on video and then replicate on the field.  To see a demonstration of the program, please go to www.catzcoach.com.  Click on the Login box and use the username “demo2” and the password “password”.   To sign up for the program, click on the Sign Up box. Make sure to get a coupon code from your age group coordinator so there will be no charge for you.

If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail at msapers@catzsports.com or call me at (781) 449-2289.

As background, the intramural program is an in-town program (no travel to other towns) for boys and girls who want to play soccer with with Newtonites from grades one through six.  Teams are organized by grade and if enough parents volunteer, around elementary schools. Children who are Newton residents or who attend Newton schools are eligible to play.  We have two seasons.  The Fall season runs from the beginning of September to the beginning of November while the Spring runs from the beginning of April to Mid June. Registration typically opens in June for the Fall Season and November for the Spring Season.
UPDATE *** The Spring 2015 season will run from April 11th through June 13th with NO GAMES OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND.
The goal of the intramural program is to develop player skills in a fun and engaging environment. To this goal we approach age group development in the following manner:
1st grade: We run an "Academy" style program in first grade which plays every Saturday. Players are assigned a time slot which will remain unchanged each week (they will not be assigned to a team). Each session will be run by a professional coach and will be a split between skill training and small sided games. The focus of our first grade program is to establish a solid foundation of ball skills for all players which will serve as their building blocks for years to come.
2nd grade: As with 1st grade, 2nd grade teams play every Saturday. The first half of every Saturday session is focussed on skill development led by professional coaches who follow a US Soccer developed skill curriculum. The second half of each session is devoted to games coached by their NYS parent volunteer where the children can apply the skills they have just learned in a game situation which will encourage many touches on the ball.
3rd grade: Teams play a game every Saturday and have 1 practice during the week. Games are 6 v 6 and are 60 minutes long (2 x 30 min halves). Practices will be run by your team's volunteer coach on a day/time/location decided by said coach. An age appropriate curriculum will be provided to each coach to ensure key skills are being taught across each age group.
4th / 5th / 6th grade: Teams play a game every Saturday and have 1 practice during the week. Games are 6 v 6and are 60 minutes long (2 x 30 min halves). Practices will be run by your team's volunteer coach on a day/time/location decided by said coach. An age appropriate curriculum will be provided to each coach to ensure key skills are being taught across each age group.

Volunteers Needed -- No Experience Necessary!
As with all volunteer organizations we rely on the time many of you commit to help coach. If you are interested in coaching (as a head coach, an assistant or in some other role) please indicate this when you register your child. No experience coaching or playing soccer is required and we will help train you to help the kids. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our program and we speak from personal experience when we say that both you and the children will benefit enormously from your involvement. At all levels we will provide you with a curriculum and coaching tips to help you through your season and to provide a positive experience for your team and for you!
