MTOC U-16 Rangers State Champions June 2010

The Newton Youth Soccer Rangers won the BU-16 Division 1 championship at the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) held in Lancaster, MA on June 25-27, 2010.  In the round robin stage of MTOC the Rangers won all three of their games with a 3-1 victory over Lynn, and 4-0 and 6-0 wins over Northbridge and Fall River.  Rangers then moved on to defeat Woburn 3-0 in the semi-finals.

The Rangers faced Lynn again in the championship game.  After being down 1-2 at halftime, Rangers persevered with the hard work, skill, teamwork and heart that have been the hallmarks of the team all season.  After a tying goal midway through the 2nd half and a spectacular clear off the goal line to keep Lynn from scoring, Rangers scored the winning goal in the final minute to claim the MTOC championship 3-2.

Representing Newton Youth Soccer, the state champion Rangers are a team of 5 freshmen and 13 sophomores from Newton North and South high schools.  Pictured in the photo are: back row, from left: Dan Hawkins, coach, Tim Stanton, Gage Neirinckx (holding standings), Luke Westman, Jackson Moss-Hawkins, Sheldon Cochrane, Peter Block, Sam Gordon-Koven, Paul Bridi, John Westman, assistant coach; front row, from left: Carter Tiernan, Rob Morgan, Jeff Noymer, Arthur Moss-Hawkins, Matthew Moss-Hawkins, Dylan O’Brien, Sam Davis, Nick Knaian; not pictured: Genevieve Moss-Hawkins, assistant coach, Julian Still, Daniel Swain.

Newton Boys U12’s win Soccer’s State Title (MTOC S'09)

On Sunday in  Lancaster , Newton Boys U12 team won the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC)  2nd Division soccer title with a 2-0 victory over Cold Spring. The spring season started slowly for  Newton , who despite losing their first 2 games went from strength to strength on to win the next 15 culminating with the State title.  Qualifying for the Tournament as wildcards the Newton Lions defeated  Weymouth  and  Plymouth  on Friday, beat a spirited side from Norton on Saturday to go through the semi finals on Sunday. The semi saw them pitted against their strong rivals, Concord-Carlisle, with whom they split their previous two games. Tied 0-0 after full time and another 10 minutes of extra time the game went to a nail biting penalty shootout. Level after 8 penalties Newton’s goalkeeper Joe” The Cat” Esbenshade made a diving save to put Newton into the final.  Their 2-0 win in the final was all the more impressive as  Newton  had no substitutes for the final game as players headed out on family vacation commitments. It was a great display  of skill and stamina from the Newton team, Joe Esbenshade, Shawn Suzuki, Noah Levine, Nat Brown, TJ Melendez, Koby Antwi, Rohan Doherty, Alex Kiritsy, Nick Kieran, Sam Detjen, and Balazs Bonyhay, - congratulations to the team and the coaches Mike Detjen and Istvan Bonyhay for a fantastic season and a State title victory for Newton.
