Newton Youth Soccer ("NYS") participates in BAYS, the Boston Area Youth Soccer League. BAYS is one of several regional leagues across Massachusetts that provide "travel" soccer, allowing teams from different towns to play one another. Each Spring, Newton fields about 65 teams from age nine through age eighteen. There is also a smaller BAYS program in the Fall. Both boys and girls are invited to participate in all NYS activities, although NYS is predominantly boys. (Newton Girls Soccer is a separate program for girls only www.newtongirlssoccer.org ).
BAYS games are played on Saturdays (through U14). The spring season runs for ten weeks from early April through mid-June. The fall season is from early September to mid-November. In addition to the weekly games, teams generally practice twice a week. Half of the games are "away," within an area bounded roughly by Routes 3 and 495.
Unlike
our Fall intramural program, BAYS teams are organized by birthdate and according
to the players’ level of soccer skill.
Tryouts:
BAYS tryouts for Newton Youth Soccer are held once each year in the Spring. We do our best to make the tryout process a positive, fun experience for the players. Tryout schedules are released in May when spring registration is opened. In many cases the differences between players are not significant so that team placements, especially in the younger age groups, are at best approximations.
Due to the large number of teams and players involved, make up tryouts are generally NOT available. If you have an irreconcilable conflict, speak with your coach or age group coordinator. Since teams are organized by single-year age groupings based on date of birth, it is important that you provide accurate information when you register and that you are sure that you attend the correct tryout.
Coaching:
We
strongly encourage you to get involved as a volunteer coach or assistant coach
as a way to offer your time to the program. Superior soccer skill or experience
is not required to be a BAYS coach. What is required is the ability to work with
children and a willingness to learn. If you have limited or even no soccer
experience, we can provide you with training and support to enable you to become
a competent coach for your child’s team. To volunteer as a coach please
contact your age group coordinator.
