CITY OF NEWTON OVERVIEW

 Practice Fields

Fields are a limited resource.  There are many more teams than fields and it always the rule that we share fields with other soccer teams and other sports.  Pick a less popular time to practice (Friday afternoon is always the most crowded) and a less popular field.  You do not need goals to practice, or a lined field.  All you need is some open space.

Care of Fields

Newton Youth Soccer and Newton Girls Soccer have, with the City of Newton Parks and Recreation Department, embarked on an ambitious program to improve the quality of Newton's soccer fields.  Sharing costs [NYS 25%, NGS 25%, City of Newton 50%] we have spent jointly over $200,000 to install on-site wells and irrigation and to regrade and seed fields. We expect more expenditure over the next five years.  The time and effort show at Weeks Field, Nahanton Field and our other renovated fields which are among the highest quality soccer fields in Massachusetts.

Take care of our fields.

The fields are our precious resource. Per our policy, under no circumstances should you practice or play on an exceptionally wet or muddy field or when officially closed.  This policy will be enforced and coaches disciplined when violating this rule. Take extra care not to tear up the goal mouths.  One session of abuse can ruin a field for a season.  You do not need to use the goals to practice.  If you do use the goals, move them out of the goal area.   We are trying to ensure our fields are available for years of use.  Make sure that others do not abuse the fields.  Please check the Hotline for field conditions at 617-928-6061.  When you leave a field after practice, if the goals are portable, please leave the goals a few yards behind or to the side of the goal mouths, to avoid unnecessary wear and tear during the week.  Report Field Problems

Travel Make-up Game Field Re-scheduling:

Field Re-scheduler:  Stanley Miller

Greetings travel coaches,

I am the make-up travel game field re-scheduler for 6v6, 8v8, and 11v11 fields.  NYS and NGS are granted a fields permit from the Parks& Rec department for the use of Newton fields during specified times during the week each season.   To schedule makeup games, I have a field’s grid spreadsheet showing all games (Travel and IM) and practices (Travel only) per field, and a listing of each NYS and NGS Travel teams by age group, number and coach.

  This is an email process!

1.      Please email me sjm_902@comcast.net   as soon as you know you need to reschedule a game.  Include the following in your request

·   a primary and secondary date and time.  These dates should already be agreed upon with the opposing coach!

Available timeslots:

Saturdays: 9:00, 10:30, 11:45, 1:00, 2:30, 4:00 and 5:30.

Sunday’s: 1:00, 2:45, 4:30, and 6:00.

·   Your team number (from the coaches list)

·   Field size requested (6x6, 8x8 or 11x11)

·   Date, time and location of original field (the one you won’t be using) if rescheduling in advance of the original game date (pre-pone)

·   You may include a field preference, but it is not required.

2.      I will send you an email with a new field assignment.  If neither your primary nor secondary requests are available,  I’ll recommend an alternate date and time as close as possible to one of your requests.  Please respond as soon as possible to accept the recommendation and commit the field for your makeup game.  Requests will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

3.      If I need to reschedule a game on a field where a practice is scheduled to take place, I will copy the “practicing coaches” on my email to the “rescheduling coach” confirming the new game time.  Thanks in advance for your flexibility!

4.      After a game date and time is confirmed, inform the NYS travel referee coordinator johnxmckenna@gmail.com so that new referees can be assigned to your game.

Remember, the closer you stick to the process, the easier it will be for us to meet your needs!

A few tips for a smoother process:

·   Keep requests simple and clear with team number plus dates and times.

·   Scheduling makeup games during your approved practice time and field is good, these requests will almost always be granted and I’ll move the other teams you practice with off the field.

·   Friday nights are very difficult to get a field as many teams practice that night.  Request these as a last resort.

·   For 11v11 makeup games, we may be able to use Forte field in Nonantum under the lights until 7:00 pm.   Parks&Rec must be called with the weekly schedule every Monday to get the lights turned on. Please inform the re-scheduler ahead of time.

·   If a makeup game cancels, even at the last minute, please Email as soon as you know, so I can use the field for another game.  This is especially true for the Forte field games where I have to inform the Parks&Rec not to turn the lights on.

·   Public schools use of the fields for their activities trump our games and practices.  I have no knowledge of their schedule or other leagues practice and game schedules.  If you find that you have conflicts, please calmly work things out at that time and send me feedback so I can stay away from the conflict.

·   When there is no alternative, I will move practices to schedule makeup games.  Coaches are responsible for finding a piece of the field or alternative location for practice (elementary schools).
