**** JANUARY 2017 UPDATE -- IMPORTANT SPRING UPDATE INCLUDING DATES****
The intramural program is an in-town program (no travel to other towns) for boys and girls from grades one through six. Teams are organized by grade and children who are Newton residents or who attend Newton schools are eligible to play. Games are played on Saturdays and practices vary by age group. The goal of the intramural program is to develop player skills in a fun and engaging environment.
The Spring 2017 season is scheduled to start on April 8, 2017 and will run for 9 total weeks with no game on Memorial Day Weekend.
***Reminder: Newton Youth Soccer is primarily boys soccer. We do welcome girls that want to play primarily with boys. If you prefer you can go to Newton Girls Soccer to register for the girls program.

To maximize the benefits of our program for the the children, we approach age group development in the following manner:
: We run an "Academy" style program in first grade which plays every Saturday for 1 hour, typically in the mornings. Players are assigned a time slot which will remain unchanged each week (they will not be assigned to a team). Each session will be run by a professional coach and will be a split between skill training and small sided games. The focus of our first grade program is to establish a solid foundation of ball skills for all players which will serve as their building blocks for years to come.
As with 1st grade, 2nd grade teams play every Saturday, usually in the mornings. Sessions are typically 75 minutes. The first part of every Saturday session is focused on skill development led by professional coaches who follow a US Soccer developed skill curriculum. The second half of each session is devoted to games coached by their NYS parent volunteer where the children can apply the skills they have just learned in a 4v4 game situation (no goalies) which will encourage many touches on the ball.
Similar to 2nd grade, teams play a game every Saturday. The first half hour of each Saturday session is dedicated to practice followed by a 40 minute game. By 3rd grade games are 7 v 7 with a goalie. In 3rd grade we do expect our volunteer coaches to run 1 roughly 60-75 minute practice per week. Practices will be run by your team's volunteer coach on a day/time/location decided by said coach. Typically the practice will be held at the local elementary school. An age appropriate curriculum will be provided to each coach to ensure key skills are being taught across each age group.
4th / 5th / 6th grade:
Teams play a game every Saturday and have 1 practice during the week. Games are 7 v 7 and are 60 minutes long (2 x 30 min halves). In IM 4/5/6 we do expect our volunteer coaches to run 1 roughly 75 minute practice per week. Practices will be run by your team's volunteer coach on a day/time/location decided by said coach. Typically the practice will be held at the local elementary school. An age appropriate curriculum will be provided to each coach to ensure key skills are being taught across each age group.
Volunteers Needed -- No Experience Necessary!
As with all volunteer organizations we rely on the time many of you commit to help coach. If you are interested in coaching (as a head coach, an assistant or in some other role) please indicate this when you register your child. No experience coaching or playing soccer is required and we will help train you to help the kids.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of our program and we speak from personal experience when we say that both you and the children will benefit enormously from your involvement. At all levels we will provide you with a curriculum and coaching tips to help you through your season and to provide a positive experience for your team and for you!
