Newton Youth Soccer - 40 years and going strong

In-Town Intramural Program

Late registration fees begin August 1st so be sure to register before then.  A $25 late fee will be imposed at that time.  If you miss registering by August 1st, be SURE to register prior to our $100 late fee which takes effect August 15th.

The Fall season starts September 10th and runs for 10 weeks until November 12th.  There are NO GAMES COLUMBUS DAY WEEKEND

Newton Youth Soccer's Intramural program is an in-town program (no travel to other towns) for boys and girls who want to play soccer with Newtonites from grades one through six. Teams are organized by grade.  If enough parents volunteer to help, we can further organize around elementary schools.   Children who are Newton residents or who attend Newton schools are eligible to play.  We have two seasons.  The Fall season runs from the beginning of September to the beginning of November while the Spring runs from the beginning of April to Mid June.  Registration typically opens in June for the Fall Season and November for the Spring Season.

The goal of the intramural program is to develop player skills in a fun and engaging environment.  To achieve this goal we approach age group development in the following manner:

1st grade: We run an "Academy" style program in first grade which plays every Saturday for 1 hour, typically in the mornings.  Players are assigned a time slot which will remain unchanged each week (they will not be assigned to a team). Each session will be run by a professional coach and will be a split between skill training and small sided games.  The focus of our first grade program is to establish a solid foundation of ball skills for all players which will serve as their building blocks for years to come.

2nd grade: As with 1st grade, 2nd grade teams play every Saturday, usually in the mornings.  Sessions are typically 75 minutes.  The first part of every Saturday session is focused on skill development led by professional coaches who follow a US Soccer developed skill curriculum. The second half of each session is devoted to games coached by their NYS parent volunteer where the children can apply the skills they have just learned in a 4v4 game situation (no goalies) which will encourage many touches on the ball.

3rd grade: Similar to 2nd grade, teams play a game every Saturday.   The first half hour of each Saturday session is  dedicated to practice followed by a 40 minute game.  By 3rd grade games are 7 v 7 with a goalie.  In 3rd grade we do expect our volunteer coaches to run 1 roughly 60-75 minute practice per week.  Practices will be run by your team's volunteer coach on a day/time/location decided by said coach.   Typically the practice will be held at the local elementary school.  An age appropriate curriculum will be provided to each coach to ensure key skills are being taught across each age group.

4th / 5th / 6th grade:  Teams play a game every Saturday and have 1 practice during the week.  Games are 7 v 7 and are 60 minutes long (2 x 30 min halves).  In IM 4/5/6 we do expect our volunteer coaches to run 1 roughly 75 minute practice per week.  Practices will be run by your team's volunteer coach on a day/time/location decided by said coach.   Typically the practice will be held at the local elementary school.  An age appropriate curriculum will be provided to each coach to ensure key skills are being taught across each age group.

Volunteers Needed -- No Experience Necessary!
As with all volunteer organizations we rely on the time many of you commit to help coach. If you are interested in coaching (as a head coach, an assistant or in some other role) please indicate this when you register your child. No experience coaching or playing soccer is required and we will help train you to help the kids. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our program and we speak from personal experience when we say that both you and the children will benefit enormously from your involvement. At all levels we will provide you with a curriculum and coaching tips to help you through your season and to provide a positive experience for your team and for you!
